Franklin Township covers about 46 square miles and more than 68,000 residents, from the Somerset section around Hamilton Street to villages such as East Millstone, Griggstown, Middlebush and Franklin Park. The Delaware and Raritan Canal runs along its western edge beside the Millstone River, and every property within 1,000 feet of the canal sits in a local historic district. We take on additions, new houses, apartment buildings and commercial work across the township from our office in nearby Milltown.

Our Services
Houses, apartment buildings and commercial space for a township that mixes historic canal villages with the Hamilton Street business corridor.
In Franklin’s local historic districts, which include East Millstone, Franklin Park, Kingston and Middlebush villages and the canal corridor, exterior additions and alterations go to the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission for review. We shape each addition for that review, matched to the house and the village around it.

On Hamilton Street, our firm is providing construction administration assistance for the five-story mixed-use building the Planning Board approved in 2024, with 120 apartments and an affordable day care center. We bring the same practical construction knowledge to the apartment and mixed-use buildings we design.

The Hamilton Street Business District, once the township’s main street, has its own zoning district and a Special Improvement District that funds programs and improvements along the corridor. We design storefronts, offices and buildings that combine shops with apartments, for owners there and elsewhere in Franklin.

Franklin is often described as eight villages in one community: East Millstone, Franklin Park, Griggstown, Middlebush, Somerset, Zarephath and parts of Kingston and Little Rocky Hill. We design for the character of the village your property is in.
Franklin runs both a Planning Board and a Zoning Board of Adjustment, so the board that hears your project depends on the approvals it needs. We coordinate with township staff early, letting design and approvals run side by side.
Hamilton Street’s business district runs to the New Brunswick border, and Kingston straddles the Millstone River into South Brunswick. Our Milltown office serves those neighboring Middlesex towns too, so cross-border projects stay with one firm.
Griggstown’s 861-acre National Register district follows Canal Road, and the Six Mile Run Historic District preserves farmsteads tied to Dutch settlement. Our additions and restorations respect a house’s architectural integrity, whatever its age.
From civil and structural engineering to mechanical systems and sustainable design, Kurt brings in specialty consultants and our team manages their work.
We answer the phone, and most new clients come to us through people we have worked with before.
Is my Franklin property in a historic district?
It may be, if it lies within 1,000 feet of the Delaware and Raritan Canal or in East Millstone, Franklin Park, Kingston or Middlebush villages, which are Franklin’s local historic districts. The township currently has no individually designated historic sites.
What does the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission review?
It reviews exterior additions, alterations, removals and demolitions on properties in Franklin’s local historic districts. We prepare drawings for that review along with the rest of your application.
Is Somerset a separate town?
No. Somerset is one of Franklin Township’s villages, and the Somerset postal name dates to a post office opened on Franklin Boulevard in 1961.
Do you work in Kingston?
Yes. Kingston sits on both sides of the county line, partly in Franklin and partly in South Brunswick, and we serve both sides from our Milltown office.
