Westfield took its name from the western fields of the old Elizabethtown tract and became a town in 1903. Its downtown grew up around the commuter rail line to New York and now counts more than 200 retail establishments, with a Special Improvement District managed by the Downtown Westfield Corporation. Across its 6.7 square miles, we take on everything from a kitchen addition to a mixed-use building downtown.

Our Services
Houses, additions, apartments and shopfronts for a town whose downtown was named a Great Place in New Jersey in 2013.
Westfield’s Planning Board adopted a Historic Preservation Master Plan Element in 2024, and the town’s Historic Preservation Commission has jurisdiction over designated historic properties. We plan additions in keeping with a house’s period and proportions, with drawings ready for every review they face.

Proposals to subdivide lots holding older Westfield homes have drawn close public attention in recent years. We design new houses that sit well on their street, beginning with site strategy and the way your family wants to live.

Westfield received the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey’s 2025 Municipal Award for its efforts to enhance and sustain supportive housing. That association named our Townsend Street development in New Brunswick its 2026 Project of the Year, and that experience informs the housing we design in Westfield.

A 2022 New Jersey Historic Trust planning grant supported work on the Downtown Westfield Historic District, a corridor the Trust traces to nineteenth-century commerce. We design storefront renovations, restaurants and offices, planned in phases to hold downtime to a minimum.

Westfield has a Planning Board, a seven-member Zoning Board of Adjustment and a Board of Architectural Review that advises both boards. Bringing architectural review in at the concept stage lets it shape the design instead of revising it late.
Our commercial clients include franchise brands such as Starbucks, Hallmark and Goddard School, and we translate their brand standards into designs that meet local codes.
Our work can continue past permits into construction administration, as it does on a five-story mixed-use building in Franklin Township.
Westfield clients work directly with Kurt J. Ludwig, AIA and a compact team that includes an architect, a senior project manager and an interiors specialist.
Energy code compliance for residential and commercial work is handled in-house by our architect, so it is built into the drawings from the start.
Word of mouth has driven our practice since 1991, along with the clients who keep coming back.
What does Westfield’s Board of Architectural Review do?
It is a five-member advisory board that reviews design and reports to the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. It meets about once a month, generally on the last Monday.
Is downtown Westfield a historic district?
The downtown has been studied as the Downtown Westfield Historic District with support from a 2022 New Jersey Historic Trust planning grant, which describes it as a commercial corridor that grew around the commuter rail line.
How does the 2024 preservation plan affect my house?
The Historic Preservation Master Plan Element, adopted unanimously by the Planning Board in 2024, documents the town’s historic properties and districts to better inform local zoning. Whether it touches your project depends on your property and the approvals you need.
Do you also work in Scotch Plains?
Yes. We serve Scotch Plains and the rest of Union County, along with Middlesex, Somerset, Monmouth and Ocean counties, from our Milltown office.
Thank you for considering Kurt J. Ludwig, AIA for your Westfield project. A member of our team will reply with a next step.
