Sea Bright is a narrow barrier peninsula about 3.6 miles long and, on average, less than a quarter mile wide, with the Atlantic on one side and the Shrewsbury River on the other. A seawall runs the length of the borough and was repaired in 2017 and 2018 after Sandy, and about 1,450 people live here. We design homes and commercial buildings for that exposed setting.

Our Services
Homes, housing and businesses for a barrier borough where design starts with flood exposure.
Sandy’s storm surge ravaged Sea Bright’s downtown business district in 2012, and the Shrewsbury River still floods low-lying blocks from the back side. An addition here can mean raising or rebuilding to a safer elevation, and we design to keep the house’s character above the flood line.

In Point Pleasant, we designed a home on pilings to replace one Sandy destroyed in 2012, built to resist future storms, and it came through a storm in October 2026. We bring that same approach to new houses on Sea Bright lots.

A federal study of the Shrewsbury River basin in Sea Bright recommended elevating up to 34 structures to reduce flood damage. We design multi-family buildings that put living space above flood risk from the start.

Sea Bright’s downtown sits along Ocean Avenue, Route 36, between the beach and the river. We design restaurants, shops and beach-area businesses with flood-resistant construction, phased to limit disruption.

✓ 30+ Years in Practice
Sea Bright adopted a Strategic Recovery Planning Report in 2014 to guide rebuilding after Sandy. Our designs work from the same reality: flood risk is part of every lot.
With the ocean and the river less than a quarter mile apart in most places, flood design here works from both directions.
Kurt coordinates the structural engineers that pile foundations and elevated framing depend on.
Our team coordinates architects, engineers and planners on your behalf, so a Sea Bright owner deals with one firm.
Our architect handles building energy compliance, so efficiency is part of the drawings rather than an afterthought.
Referrals from past clients have carried our practice for more than three decades.
Is my Sea Bright property in a flood zone?
Much of the borough is low-lying and floods from the ocean side and from the Shrewsbury River, so many lots face flood rules. Check your flood zone on FEMA’s maps, and we will design to the elevation your site requires.
When was the seawall repaired?
Repairs to the Sea Bright-Monmouth Beach Seawall, which runs about 4.7 miles, took place in 2017 and 2018 after Sandy damage.
Can an existing house be raised?
Raising is one of the measures a federal study recommended for up to 34 Sea Bright structures. Whether it suits your house depends on its structure and condition, which is where design and engineering begin.
Do you work in Rumson too?
Yes. Rumson, across the Shrewsbury River, is another of our Monmouth County locations. The first bridge connecting the two boroughs was built in 1870.
Thank you for considering Kurt J. Ludwig, AIA for your Sea Bright project. A member of our team will reply with a next step.
