Highland Park was named for its setting above the Raritan River, and a seven-span stone arch bridge built in 1892 links it to New Brunswick. Formed as a borough in 1905, it holds about 15,000 residents in 1.8 square miles, with Raritan Avenue running through its downtown. We design additions, new homes, apartments and commercial spaces throughout the borough.

Our Services
Additions, houses, apartments and storefronts for a compact riverside borough, from our office elsewhere in Middlesex County.
Highland Park grew as a suburb of New Brunswick in the second half of the 1800s, with estates and single-family homes along Raritan Avenue, River Road and South Adelaide Avenue. Our additions respect a house’s original character and come with thorough permit drawings.

Sites range from River Road, which follows the curve of the Raritan’s bank, to the streets off Cedar Lane in the borough’s north end. We design each new house around its setting and the way your household lives.

The borough adopted a redevelopment plan for 420-424 Raritan Avenue, the former Stop & Shop site, and its Planning Board has studied other blocks as possible areas in need of redevelopment. We design apartments and mixed-use buildings, plus conversions planned to keep residents in place when possible.

Raritan Avenue once carried the Lincoln Highway, and a borough survey traced buildings along it back to about 1860. We design storefronts, offices and restaurant spaces that respect the avenue’s history.

Just across the Raritan in New Brunswick, we designed Townsend Street, the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey’s 2026 Project of the Year. We bring the same attention to energy use to housing projects in Highland Park.
Highland Park has both a Planning Board and a Zoning Board of Adjustment, and the borough notifies its Historical Commission when an application may affect a historic building. We coordinate early so those reviews move alongside design.
Our interiors specialist focuses on smart space planning and well-balanced design, valuable when a home or storefront has to work within its existing walls.
We pair meticulous detailing with practical construction knowledge, so the drawings for a Highland Park renovation account for how the work will be built.
Professionalism starts with responsiveness at our firm. From your first phone call through delivery, we act as your partner.
Builders, municipal staff and past clients have known us for decades, and those relationships bring us most of our new work.
Which board will review my Highland Park project?
That depends on the relief your project needs. Both the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment meet at Borough Hall, 221 South Fifth Avenue, and appeals of zoning decisions go to the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Could my house be considered historic?
Possibly. The borough’s master plan has a Historic Preservation Element, and historic resource surveys have documented buildings along Raritan Avenue. Properties identified in those documents can trigger notice to the Historical Commission.
Do you design restaurants and retail spaces?
Yes. Restaurant and millwork design are part of our team’s background, and our commercial clients include franchise brands such as Starbucks and Dunkin’.
Do you work in neighboring towns too?
Yes. Highland Park borders Edison, New Brunswick and Piscataway, and we serve clients across Middlesex County from our Milltown office.
Thank you for considering Kurt J. Ludwig, AIA for your Highland Park project. A member of our team will reply with a next step.
